Chelsea triumphs over Liverpool 2-1 on a second-half goal by Didier Drogba, thereby sealing the FA Cup for the fourth time in six seasons. The Blues survive a late onslaught by Liverpool in the 131st final. Didier became the first player to score in four finals.
Terry became the first captain to lift the FA Cup four times with the same club. He said that it was a fantastic experience and it is something that they live for. He added that at times people have slated them as too old, past it or not together, but as a team, they come together and unite when their backs are against the wall, and they have done that superbly in the last 16 or 17 games.
After 11 minutes, Ramires put Chelsea in front, capitalizing on blunders by Liverpool. In the 52nd, Drogba sent the ball through defender Martin Skrtel’s legs and into the net after being fed by Frank Lampard. He scored his eighth goal in eight games at Wembley. Lampard said that Drogba is his hero. He added that no striker he had ever played with has scored so many important goals in finals.
In the 64th minute, Liverpool substitute Andy Carroll scored after working his way around Chelsea captain John Terry. He thought he had the tying goal as well when his header was swatted away on the goal line via the crossbar by Petr Cech. Liverpool’s appeal for a goal was waved off by the referee and replays failed to show the entire ball had crossed the line.
Chelsea, maintaining their strong play since Roberto Di Matteo became interim manager two months ago and awaits the Champions League final in two weeks against Bayern Munich. Matteo has succeeded Andre Villas-Boas when the team was in free fall. Lampard said about new interim manager that he has been brilliant, and he has turned the club around.
Meanwhile in the Premier League, Arsenal’s grip on third place loosened s they were held to a 3-3 draw by Norwich. Arsenal is looking to qualify for the Champions League. The loss came in Arsene Wenger’s 900th match in charge of the London club.
Norwich’s Steve Morison scored in the 85th minute to secure the draw. Arsenal is now just two points ahead of Tottenham. The latter club will play Newcastle today. After the draw, the point lifted Norwich to 13th place.
In a Premier League season with two late goals, Robin van Persie equaled Thierry Henry’s Arsenal record of 30 goals. Yossi Benayoun of Arsenal opened the scoring after just two minutes. Norwich was in front at half time by the goals from Wes Hoolahan and Grant Holt.
The Premier League Outrights are hooting up as the season is nearing its end. The fight for the title is between the biggest rivals. The Outrights have Man City-1/8, Man Utd-36/5.
